What is Beacon
Literacy?
The Beacon Literacy Development
Program is a remedial reading system which has been proven
to offer significant results in regard to reading problems
caused by both internal and environmental constraints.
Some students have gained as much
as four grade levels in as little as ten weeks. Average
improvement in that time frame is around one and one half to
two grade levels.
The Beacon Program is a unique new
approach to reading development which, while acknowledging
the strengths of conventional strategies, incorporates
several new theoretical and technological advances.
Who Can the Program
Help?
The Beacon Program was developed
especially for those individuals who, because of innate
learning disorders, are unable to acquire effective reading
skills through traditional methods.
The Beacon Literacy Program has
been proven effective with a wide range of dysfunctional
readers of all ages, including those suffering from various
forms of dyslexia, ADD, and learning disorders.
The Beacon System has also proven
effective when teaching English as a second language.
Why is Beacon So
Effective?
The Beacon System capitalizes on
the self-voice approach by using one's own voice - the same
voice one hears when thinking and reading - to ensure a
sensory-appropriate instructional medium for both teaching
and learning phonemic and recognition skills necessary for
successful reading.
The Beacon Method employs a fully
integrated visual, auditory, oral, and kinesthetic
curriculum which is combined with a multi-sensory
teaching-learning approach utilizing a new recording
technique that mimics the important neurological and
cognitive aspects of natural speech production in self-talk
format.
Parallel research from the field of
cognitive behavior therapy has shown that people learn much
more quickly and, importantly, retain that learning when it
is in their own voice. Cognitive therapy research has shown
that to change a person's behavior one has to change the
internal verbal script that controls it, in other words the
self-voice.
