About Us

The Literacy Council of Sumner County (LCSC), located in Hendersonville, Tennessee, is a learning and resource center for all ages. A non-profit organization originally chartered in 1983, our mission is to provide resources, counseling, and tutoring to children, youth, and adults to enhance their skills in all academic areas.

LCSC is a United Way Agency.

LCSC relies on volunteer tutors and support from local and private donations, as well as annual fund raising activities and grants.

Nobody is ever turned away for inability to pay for services.

Literacy is not the sole focus; math is also taught.

LCSC Impact

  • In 2009, the LCSC served 82 students directly, 130 indirectly (through consultations and referrals) from Sumner and surrounding counties.
  • The same year, 33 volunteers gave 1,665 hours serving our agency.

Funding

LCSC is a 501c3 tax exempt organization and a member of United Way of Sumner County. Funding comes from the Hendersonville and Gallatin city governments, private foundations, corporate donors, and individual donors. All gifts are tax deductible.

Take Gallatin Pike South (Hwy 31E) into Hendersonville. We are located south of Old Shackle Island Road in the City Square Shopping Center. The City Square signs are in the shape of an X. We are behind Papa John's in the back of the shopping center, inside the first set of glass double doors.

Directions from South Hendersonville or Goodlettsville

Take Main Street North (Hwy 31E) into Hendersonville. We are located just past Kentucky Fried Chicken in the City Square Shopping Center. The City Square signs are in the shape of an X. We are behind Papa John's in the back of the shopping center, inside the first set of glass double doors.

Ronald R. Humphrys, President
Mr. Humphrys is a graduate of Middle Tennessee State University, with a BS in Economics and Finance. He retired from Dollar General Corporation after twenty-seven years with the company. During his career he held several merchandising positions, was a member of the corporate strategic planning team, led several major multi-department projects, and was VP of Logistics and Importing.

Ronnie Wise, Vice President
A professional librarian and the founder and former CEO of the Bolivar County Literacy Council, Inc. in Mississippi. He now works with his wife in her motion picture research company.

Eddie Wyatt, Treasurer
Owner of Value Max, a sales and merchandising service for the retail industry. Former vice president divisional merchandise manager for softlines and home at Fred's and Dollar General Stores. He currently serves on the Gallatin Board of Zoning Appeals and the board of directors for the Woodhaven Homeowners Association.

Jill Grim, Secretary
An attorney in private practice in Hendersonville, Jill has volunteered as a student mentor, as a home owner's association board member, a special advocate for children, and PTA vice president

Michelle Bellah
Michelle has held various positions in her fifteen years with PepsiCo. Currently she is a senior national account manager, calling on Dollar General. She holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Texas Tech University, and resides with her husband and son in Hendersonville.

Linsey Capps
Linsey is a graduate of Providence College in Rhode Island, with a degree in French and Business, and The Art Institute of Atlanta, with a degree in Interior Design. She owns Tile & Stone Design, LLC, in Hendersonville, TN.

Jeff Coker
An insurance agent with CPW Insurance Services, Inc. He is a member of Insurors of Tennessee and the Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce.

Lynda Evjen
Lynda is the owner/president of Evjen and Associates. She has many years of experience in fundraising and helping non-profits. She holds board positions with Hendersonville Optimist Club, Rhinestone Cure for Diabetes, the Wang Foundation and HolidayFest.

Bryan Jones
A CPA, certified financial planner with CPA Consulting Group, PLLC in Nashville, Bryan concentrates  his practice on comprehensive estate and financial planning, risk assessments, retirement and tax planning. He serves on three boards and enjoys spending time with his wife and two children in their home in Goodlettsville.

Elizabeth A. Lacey
A retired social worker, she has also worked with people with drug or alcohol addiction, the homeless, and persons with needs for personal enrichment through GED completion and other tools for personal growth.

Dr. Floyd E. Lacey, Sr.
Retired military chaplain, retired pastor and former supervisor of a preschool program. He is a former college instructor and a Christian educator at the local and denominational level. He is a community worker concerned about the welfare of his community.

Julianne Lee
Professional novelist, with ten books of historical fiction published by Penguin Putnam, Inc. Former journalist and writer of video sleeve copy for Fox Home Entertainment. She worked as an LCSC tutor for five years before joining the board.

Mark Ross
Press and publicity manager of Live On Stage, Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration and has experience in marketing and public relations.

Denine Torr
The director of the Community Initiatives division of Dollar General Stores, where she oversees corporate and foundation giving, employee volunteer engagement efforts, and assists with the development of cause related marketing partnerships for Dollar General's thirty-five state market.
