Student of the Month LCSC's Student of the Month for June/July is: D.H. Our student of the month has made admirable advancement in both reading and math. He's applied himself diligently, and has raised his reading level by at least two grades, according to his tutor, Carolyn Hansen. He's shown fine progress in comprehension and punctuation. Says Hansen, "I've never witnessed anyone being more interested, motivated, and applying hard work to a goal." D.H. is interested in reading books in all areas of construction work, history, and biographies. The LCSC is proud of his progress.

Services For All Ages

Eligibility
Anyone who has a need that can be met by LCSC. Anyone who struggles with reading and/or math. Many students have lacked the opportunity, or have had some other issue, that prevented them from developing reading skills. We customize tutoring based on students' needs.

Student Services
A one-time registration fee of $15 covers all materials and unlimited use of these services:*

Consultation
A one-on-one consultation allows us to gauge each student's strengths and weaknesses to determine how we can help.

Volunteer Tutoring
Volunteer tutors provide confidential, one-on-one tutoring in these areas for all ages:

• Reading and comprehension and writing skills as well as algebra, geometry, calculus and basic math.

• English as a second language

• G.E.D. preparation

Marion Foster Resource Room
The Resource room provides our community with workbooks, textbooks, computer software, educational games, and information about learning disabilities and other educational challenges.

 Specialty Student Services

Beacon Literacy Program
A one-on-one program for severe reading difficulties. 20 sessions in 10 weeks to improve decoding and spelling skills. Beacon can help readers who are:

• Unable to discriminate sound patterns within a word
• Unable to categorize such sounds
• Dyslexic
• Dysphonetic

Sumner County residents: $25/session.*
Non-residents, add $10.*

Irlen Syndrome Screening
Irlen Syndrome is a visual-perceptual problem that may cause reading problems, poor handwriting, eye-strain, fatigue, headaches, or poor comprehension. It can be treated with overlays and lenses, and we test to screen, with certified screeners.

Sumner County residents: $75 for screening.*
Non-residents add $10*

Other service information:

• Any student who is a minor must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during tutoring.
• Tutoring must occur in a public place, such as the LCSC office or a library. Tutoring may not be done in the tutor's or student's home.
• Fees vary for each program and some scholarships are available. However, we do ask for donations from those who use a program without a fee.
• LCSC services are for people of all ages.
• Please call ahead for an appointment.
